Congenital anomalies are apparent at birth in 1 in 40 of all neoborn infants. They account for 20–25% of all deaths occurring during the perinatal period and childhood up to the ge of 10 years. Terms such as malformation, deformation, dysplasia and syndrome will be defined.

Genetic factors contribute to at least 40% of all congenital anomalies. Recognition of the environmental factors lies in the potential for prevention.

Main diagnostic and differentiating clinical feature to reach a diagnosis will be discussed.
